This game came out of the cancelled Duke Nukem: Endangered Species Hunter title. Moreover, given that Vietnam is already a war somewhat seldom encountered in video games, the Soviet-Afghan war is even more of a rarity (I can't think of a single representation) and would thus have a unique appeal. The Soviet-Afghan War would fit Rising Storm 2's existing mechanics and functionality like a charm, while still being radically different and thus interesting.
